BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of death from malignant neoplasms worldwide. In Brazil, without considering non-melanoma skin tumors, breast cancer is the most prevalent among women. Law 12.732 / 12 determines that patients with breast cancer should start treatment in 60 days, however, it is observed that in some services this clinical practice is hampered due to the attendance of lesions of lesser suspicion, delay to perform complementary tests, biopsy and release of histopathological reports. The FCECON consultations are marked on average for 20 to 30 days after screening, providing a greater demand for time to attend, setting up a delay for conduction, diagnosis and initiation of therapy, priority in patients with suspected lesions. OBJECTIVES: General: To analyze the sociodemographic profile of patients who seek the Foundation of Oncology Control Center of the State of Amazonas (FCECON) to investigate breast lesions. Specific: To describe the most frequent breast lesions, to identify the delay time between the diagnostic steps until the arrival at FCECON, to propose strategies to expedite care within the institution. METHOD: present observational and analytical cross - sectional study. A semistructured questionnaire was applied, with aspects related to sociodemographic characteristics, results of examinations and time from the first symptom to the arrival at the unit. RESULTS: The age group of the patients attended was between 40-50 years and the brown breed was the most prevalent (50.7%). The disease stage was late in 50% of the patients (IIB to IIIC). The majority of the patients came from Manaus (72.7%). The mean time between the onset of symptoms and arrival at the FCECON screening was 8.3 months and between the symptom and the diagnosis of 6.8 months. CONCLUSIONS: The main sociodemographic characteristics of patients treated at FCECON, the most frequent lesions and the delay between diagnosis and treatment were demonstrated in this study. From these data, two flowcharts were proposed to expedite the care of patients with suspicious lesions after admission to the institution.
