Diagnóstico das entidades de catadores de Manaus (AM) que reciclam resíduos plásticos

Abstract

Although there is a law in Brazil for PRSN, the recycling of MSW, including plastic and paper, is deficient. For example, in the North region, the Amazon region that covers an area of 45.2% of the Brazilian territory, the recycling market is insignificant, mainly in the city of Manaus. The organizations of waste pickers in Manaus were studied to assess the market potential of recyclable plastic waste. To assess the market potential in Manaus, checklists were applied to collect data regarding the way in which the collectors' entities work. The sample consisted of seven of these organizations, with an experimental error of 2.5%. Our findings show that plastic waste is an economic part of waste picker organizations in Manaus. In addition, these entities and government authorities do not work together to solve the problem of municipal solid waste in the city of Manaus. As a result, people dump plastic waste into the landfill and into the river around the city of Manaus. Taking into account the volume of plastic waste of 91.08 tons sold per year, we have a revenue of R$ 213,072.00/year, just for the plastic waste market. The lack of information from government authorities and collectors' organizations explains the precarious situation in which only 0.27% of MSW is recycled in Manaus. However, this recycling of plastic MSW is a possible option to contribute to the reduction of the volume of GHGs that can be a profitable source of carbon credit, contributing to the sustainable development of the Amazon.
