Resumo
The objective of this study was to analyze the implications of the use of satellite
images in the awareness buildup over the changes in the forest landscape in activities of
Environmental Education in the scope of basic education (8th. grade) in the Manaus
Public Schools. The other objectivities were: 1. Identify educational activities involving
geo technologies and education in Brazil; 2. Check the student´s perception about the
change on the landscape regarding the forest cover. 3. Check the student´s perception
about the change on the landscape regarding the forest cover after the development of
environmental education activities involving the use of satellite images. The
identification of educational activities involving geo technologies and education
occurred through the selection of all works published on the Proceedings of the
Brazilian Symposium on Remote Sensing 1978 to 2013. The checking of perceptions of
students about the modification of landscapes regarding the forest cover before and after
the development of activities with satellite images was done through the questionnaires.
In the first phase of this study questionnaires were applied to seventy five (75) students
from the 8th grade of the basic education of three public schools of Manaus, covering
knowledge on environment and technology. In the second phase twenty one (21)
students were chosen from the same school to be capacitated about environmental
questions regarding the forest cover and the use of satellite images. In the third and last
phase, a final questionnaire was applied to chosen students aiming to check their
perception about the changes of forest cover after the use of satellite images. With the
aid of satellite images it was possible to work several aspects of the environmental
dynamics regarding to forest cover, starting from local situations, recognized by the
students themselves, until the knowledge of distinct realities belonging to different
regions. It is estimated that this research will contribute to a better understanding of
changes in forest landscapes and the capacitating of the use geo technological tools in
Environmental Education activities with basic education students.
