Resumo
The piramutaba (Bachyplatystoma vaillantii) is a species of catfish that performs
long migrations in white water rivers of the Amazon basin. It is currently one of
the most catfish caught by fishing in the estuary has industrial features. This
species is found in growth overfishing, a fact noted by the continuous decrease
in the average size of individuals captured. Considering the economic and
ecological importance of this species, this study aims to identify the
environments, the intensity of their production and management in the Amazon
Estuary. The study area includes four counties that belong to the State of Pará
(Salvaterra, Soure, Vigia and Belém). Information used in this study was
obtained from literature searches and questionnaires to stakeholders of the
fisheries. The results showed that the piramutaba is exploited by both industrial
and artisanal fisheries in the area of the Amazon Estuary. The production of
fisheries in the area totaled 16,063.50 tons in 1999, fell to 12,010.00 tons in the
following year and reached peak production of 24,701.00 tons in 2006. The
trend analysis of production as the actors assessment of fishing stocks
indicates a decrease in the last 10 years and the future prospects for the
production of artisanal fisheries and industrial point there will be reduced
landings in the area of the estuary.
