Resumo
This dissertation aims to investigate the contributions of the Mathematics Leveling course offered by the Department of Mathematics of UFAM in overcoming the problem of failure in
Calculus regarding the reasons generating difficulties in the teaching and learning process of
the discipline of Calculus. For this, we choose a theoretical reference that shows the evelopment of the Calculus and its teaching, we also bring a state of the art about the works that had
as research object the reprobation in Calculus and finally a survey of researches that investigated Leveling Courses in Mathematics so we could either raise or refute hypotheses. For the course methodology, we choose a predominantly qualitative approach, but using quantitative aspects, we did a case study with the leveling and discipline of Calculus I offered in the first half of 2017. Our methodology was divide into three stages: in the first stage, we searched the students’ conceptions about leveling during the course. In the second stage, we did a quantitative analysis of approval and reprobation in Calculus I during the period studied and finally
we used as instrument two electronic questionnaires to bring up the conception of students and teachers about the Course of Calculation I and Leveling after completion of both. As results, we present eight contributions of the leveling indicated by the students a priori, in the first stage,the high failure rates in the discipline of Calculus I and how the students who participated assiduously in the leveling can obtain a better performance in the discipline, we finally highlight the conceptions of the students and teachers at the end of the course leveling the discipline of Calculation, it being possible to perceived that the greatest difficulty in Calculation I identified in the answers of both it is the lack of mathematical basis and that the methodology adopted by the teacher directly influences the success of the studentâs in the discipline of Calculation I, in relation to leveling this contributes significantly to vercoming the problem of lack of base and that its contribution extends the integration of the student to the academic environment and also motivates and stimulates the student to study mathematics.
