Geografia do crime e do medo: criminalidade e violência em Manaus

Abstract

The present research, entitled "Geography of Crime and Fear: Crime and Violence in Manaus", has as its thematic focus the crime and violence in the city of Manaus, more specifically those that are perceived in the forms of crimes that result in the death of the victim, serious violence and that cause fear in society in general. To this end, some types of crimes against the person and against property were selected, as provided in the Brazilian Penal Code (CPB), to be the object of this research. In addition to crimes that cause the victim's death or serious violence, the crime of drug trafficking was also included in the research. The crimes that are the focus of this research are: intentional homicide; bodily harm followed by death, robbery, death by police intervention, robbery, drug trafficking, violent sexual crimes, rape and rape of vulnerable, and crimes of violence against women. And for comparative analysis, the crimes chosen were homicide, robbery, robbery and drug trafficking, as they are the crimes cited by the research subjects, as those most related to fear and violence, and contribute to the creation of territories and places of crime and fear in Manaus. The research approach is justified by the scarcity of geographic works on the topic of violence and crime in the city of Manaus. And yet, due to the importance that the theme presents, as being of wide interest in society, being among the great concerns of Brazilian cities in recent years, since the increasing high of violence and crime rates is a current reality. The research can contribute so that the fight against violence and crime can go beyond actions linked to repression and the consequent establishment of stereotypes for entire populations, creating territories and places criminalized and discriminated against by the population of the city of Manaus.
