Resumo

This dissertation deals with the history of the relations between the Madihadeni indigenous people and the extractive endeavor that colonized their territory, on the southern Amazonas estate, through a specific study of the category of “patrão” and it’s developments, such as it is understood and elaborated by the indigenous people. The merchant “patrão”, interpreted also on prior traditional symbolic fields such as xamanism and affinity, becomes an ensuing interpretative model for the relations amongst the Madihadeni and the surrounding national society, and also on the imagery of chiefdom. Amidst the creative production and reproduction, for themselves and for the others, of the economical models of the extractive system and the political expectations of the indigenist agencies, there is a glimpse of the processes of symbolic resistances, political strategies and transformation of the Madihadeni very own society.
