Resumo

The genital and urinary system infections, low socioeconomic level and poor or no prenatal care are important risk factors for undesirable obstetric intercurrences, such as preterm labor, premature rupture of membranes, prematurity, low birth weight newborns, fetal suffering or stillbirth. Aiming to identify, among pregnant women population from the FHCGV Obstetric Clinic, those women who present obstetric intercurrences and the possible association of those intercurrences and genital and urinary system infection, it was developed, in 2009 and 2010, a control case study with 109 patients hospitalized for childbirth care or clinical treatment. Of the 109 studied patients, 39 (36%) were considered cases, because they presented those intercurrences, and 70 (64%) were the control cases. Of the 39 cases, 31 (79%) presented genital and urinary tract infections during pregnancy and 08 (21%) did not. Of the 70 control cases, 23 (33%) presented genital and urinary tract infections during pregnancy and 47 (67%) did not, in other words, of all studied pregnant women, 54 (49%) presented infection of the urinary and genital tract during pregnancy and 55 (51%) did not present these infections. In the study, it was observed that genital and urinary tract infections increase in more than 07 times the chance of birth complications and undesirable outcomes for newborns, because of the 109 studied patients, 39 (36%) were considered cases, in other words, they presented obstetric intercurrences and, of those ones, 31 (79%) presented infection during pregnancy (OR=7.91; 95% - IC=3.144 – 19.93; p< 0. 0001). The Chi-squared test applied showed that there is an association between predict and outcome variables, in other words, the presence of genital and urinary tract infections interfere in the pregnancy outcome leading to obstetric intercurrences including premature rupture of membranes, prematurity, low birth weight newborns, fetal suffering or stillbirth.
