Resumo

Population aging is occurring rapidly awakening several studies aimed at expanding the knowledge on this topic, with discussions on the experiences of aging and ways to adapt the elderly at this stage of life in a way that has good quality of life. The objective of this study was to evaluate the nutritional status of elderly patrons of the Open University of the Third Age (UnATI) of Manaus / AM / Brazil. Cross-sectional study comprising 90 patients of both genders. Survey was carried out socioeconomic, anthropometric, dietary, biochemical, hematological and parasitological. The results showed that the population is composed mostly by females (81.1%), mean age (66 years ± 5) and male (67 years ± 3.8). It was observed that the per capita income was predominant 1-3 minimum wages (66.6%), the school that stood out was the high school (64%). The predominant classification of BMI in both genders were overweight (46.6%). The Pearson correlation showed a strong linear correlation between BMI and WC (r = 0, 8371, p = < 0, 0001). The evaluations of WC and WHR showed a population at high risk for developing chronic diseases. The biochemical and hematological tests were adequate regarding the investigated vitamins and zinc, but only with a prevalence of anemia in the female population of almost 50%. The diet consumed caloric value presented below for male gender and appropriate for females. However, the distribution of macronutrients was adequate. While the intake of vitamins A, C, E and zinc, has proved inadequate for much of the iron had population. O adequacy of almost 100% in both genders. The investigation showed that consumption of food frequency varied. Bread, rice and flour were the foods most commonly reported. Food regulators have regular use, however, butter and soda consumption was low. The disease was prevalent hypertension, and only 1.1% had intestinal parasites thus should be more research to characterize the profile of the elderly population that needs to be known given that it grows in Brazil and worldwide
