Resumo

This study aimed to compare the tooth sensitivity, gingival irritation, quality of life related to oral health and bleaching efficacy of at-home bleaching performed with 10% hydrogen peroxide using a tray-delivered system or two bleaching strip systems. Sixty-seven patients, with right superior canine darker than A2, were selected for this blind, parallel randomized clinical trial. Teeth were bleached during 14 days, with a 30-min gel contact with teeth per day. The 10% hydrogen peroxide was delivered in a bleaching tray (White Class from FGM) or it was provided in two different bleaching strips (White strips from Oral-b and Opalescence Go from Ultradent). The color changes were evaluated by subjective (Vita Classical and Vita Bleachedguide) and objective (Easy shade Spectrophotometer) methods at baseline and 30 days after the second bleaching session. Tooth sensitivity was recorded during 14 days with a five-point Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) and 0-10 visual analog scale (VAS). To evaluate the Quality of Life related to Oral Health, three instruments were used: Oral Health Impact Questionnaire -14 (OHIP-14), Oral Health Impact Questionnaire-Aesthetic and Oral Impact on Daily Performances (OIDP), before treatment, after One week from the end and thirty days after the end. All data were submitted to appropriate statistical analysis (α= 0.05). No significant difference was observed in the risks of TS among groups (p > 0.09). However, the tray-delivered 10% HP produced a higher intensity of TS when compared with the two bleaching strip groups (p < 0.04). Regarding the gingival irritation, Opalescence GO (Ultradent) showed the lowest risk of gingival irritation when compared with the tray-delivered method (p = 0.003). Significant whitening was observed in all groups, after 30 days of clinical evaluation with no significant differences between them (p > 0.06). All 10% HP systems showed significant and similar whitening after 14-day use. However, bleaching strips produced lower intensity of tooth sensitivity than the tray-delivered system. The product Opalescence Go had an additional advantage to produce lower risk of gingival when compared to the tray-delivered system.
