Resumo
Nosocomial infections caused by various microorganisms have been a huge challenge for the medicine. Among these microorganisms, Staphylococcus aureus leads all statistics of infections and also complications and morbimortality. This capability is attributed to the expression of a sophisticated defense system that provides resistance, among other factors, even to the most effective antibiotics. Manaus-AM does not differ from other large centers in Brazil and the world, because resistant strains have being identified frequently in this city. In a view of this worrying scenario for medicine, it is necessary to (1) delineate the pathogenesis of nosocomial infections and the epidemiology of S. aureus, (2) monitoring the development of resistance mechanisms, to support medical decisions in defining the treatment more adequate and (3) creating one protocol to the identification of isolates and resistance profile in a period up to 24 hours. This study describe the S. aureus resistance spectrum, obtained by two studies with an interval of five years, involving 113 patients and discuss the problem of the mechanism of the antibiotic resistance. We observed an increased frequency of infections caused by MRSA strains 47.3% to 96.6%. The increase of the MRSA strains is alarming. These results confirm the need for urgent control policy of the multi-resistant strains of S. aureus which will help prophylactically to hospital infections and also will subsidize the medical body in cases of antibiotic therapy.
