Resumo
In this work, the millenarian technique of origami and its possibilities of use in the problemsolving approach to geometry are discussed. Initially a historical itinerary is made showing the evolution of origami and its expansion around the world. Its characteristics, classifications and some of its practical applications derived from more complex and recent theoretical studies are described. Then begins a discussion of mathematics stemming from the basic principles of building origami models such as Huzita-Justin or Huzita-Hatori Axioms, Maekawa-Justin Theorem, Kawasaki-Justin Theorem, and Haga’s Theorem. In this last one more emphasis is given to involve several important geometric concepts as similarity of triangles, the theorem of Pythagoras and fractions. It ends by showing the use of origami in solving some interesting geometric problems of Mathematical Olympiads.
