A dinâmica da paisagem e uso da terra: estudo de caso no distrito da Terra Nova, Careiro da Várzea-AM

Abstract

In the Amazon, in the last 20 years, extreme hydrological events have become more and more frequent. It’s recurrence directly impacts floodplain environments and affects the way of life of riparian populations, due to the increase of its unpredictability in relation to the intensity and duration of extreme floods and drought. In this scenario, the objective of this work was to understand the landscape dynamics in the Terra Nova District, in the municipality of Careiro da Várzea, in the Amazon region, based on a case study, demonstrating an analysis of floodplain environments in four riverside communities. The methodological strategies involved quantitative and qualitative instruments with the analysis of interviews, forms, participatory mapping, remote sensing with the use of satellite images and geoprocessing. The results indicate that the changes in the landscape, due to seasonality, influence the forms of land use, as well as the spatial organization of the economic activities developed by the riverside. With the collaboration of the residents of the communities it was possible to identify the areas of use and their location during the drought and flood periods. An analysis of the landscape dynamics from satellite images from 1999 to 2016 allowed us to identify changes in the landscape environments of the Terra Nova District. Finally, the paper presents the relationship between extreme events of flood and drought, changes in the landscape and the forms of land use by the local population.
