Resumo
Bleaching of the teeth is an easy-handling and low invasive treatment with excellent results although high concentrations of hydrogen peroxide are associated with tooth sensitivity (TS). Manufactures have used this information to develop in-office low concentration gels that have found to be less effective despite of the few investigations. This research has examined a more effective hypothetical protocol for 20% hydrogen peroxide (20% HP) based on sonic activation on a randomized split-mouth clinical trial. A 22 subjects sample has had the left and right superiors hemi arches randomly allocated to 20HP group (positive control) and 20HPSmart group (experimental). Intervention consisted in two bleaching sessions with a one week interval according to fabricant`s instructions. Hemi arches on 20HPSmart received sonic activation by Smart Sonic device after 10 and 30 minutes from the beginning of each bleaching session, at a 170 Hz frequency on each anterior tooth buccal surface, with round movements. The results for color evaluation in ∆SGU (20HP= 5.6 and 20HPSmart= 5.8; p= 0.98) and in ∆E (20HP= 10.6 and 20HPSmart= 10.3; p= 0.83) presented no statistic difference (two-way ANOVA and Tukey’s test). Absolut risk for TS was equal statistically for both groups (Fisher’s exact test). Intensity of TS predominated during and 24 after the bleaching sessions, for both groups, with no statistical difference (two-way ANOVA and Tukey’s test). In the limitations of this study, it was concluded that sonic activation has had no influence on effectiveness and tooth sensitivity of in-office 20% hydrogen peroxide application.
