A construção das identidades no documentário: os povos amazônicos no cinema

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to discuss the construction of the Amazon people´s identity on the documentary cinema developed in Brazil. Therefore, we, initially, reconstruct the process of constitution of the genre through the concept of field of cultural production , elaborated by Pierre Bourdieu, perceiving the reflexes of this formation on the way the documentary cinema produced in Brazil has classified and qualified the people of the region. In the sequence, we analyse two recent documentaries that were filmed in the Brazilian Amazon. - Eu já fui seu irmão (1993), by Vincent Carelli, and Mensageiras da Luz, Parteiras da Amazônia (2002/2003), by Evaldo Mocarzel. These movies were analysed with the aim of perceiving if the use of shooting strategies which emerged with the movements of cinema vèrite and direct cinema , now widely diffused in Brazil, has reflected into a more complex and less stigmatized construction of the identity of those who live in the Brazilian Amazon Region.
