Aids is one of the most important pandemy nowadays, and one of the most serious public health problems worldwide. Brazil has established a policy of an universal access to highly active antirretroviral therapy since 1996, with great benefits to people living with HIV/aids, but with lipodystrophyas main side effect which influencing the adherence process, because body changes affecting self-image. The aim of this study was to describe the profile of adherence to treatment and determine the prevalence of abandonment of antiretroviral therapy in patients with diagnosis or clinical signs of lipodystrophy, regardless of the time of treatment, in the Specialized Unit Reference Infectious and Parasitic Diseases (URE DIPE) in Belém do Pará, during the year 2013 in order to contribute to educational initiatives to raise awareness of adherence to therapy. An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional, uncontrolled, linked to a quantitative and qualitative study was carried out, analysing 124 patients about questions contained in a standard form. In this study it was observed that the majority of patients was male, single, with incomplete primary education and monthly income up to a minimum wage. The significant variables (p <0.05) were: difficulties in understanding therapeutic scheme; presence of diabetes mellitus; interference of lipodystrophy in antiretroviral treatment adherence and knowledge about the importance of adherence to antiretrovirals for treatment and clinical outcome. We conclude that the characteristics outlined in the analyzes are not sufficient to discriminate individuals in the analyzed population in groups that have adherence or not to treatment and only a small percentage of each group has well-defined characteristics of your group. The other groups have strong characteristics in relation to the group of regular adherence to treatment, with the possibility of individuals migrate from one group to another at any time.
