Resumo

This study assumes the purpose of verifying in what sense obstetric violence presents itself as an aggression to human rights and which factors contribute to this practice. It is a topic anchored in the theme of gender that establishes dialogue with interdisciplinary knowledge, based on social sciences and social service. Obstetric violence is conceived as a disastrous practice that occurs at birth, perpetrated by health professionals, who use symbolically the founding myth of humanity (Eve) to deprecate women with words and deeds. Fieldwork has assumed the orientation of qualitative approaches without excluding quantitative aspects. The primary data collection was performed under the deep interview technique. The locus of the research focused on the maternity Institute of Women Dona Lindu, located in the city of Manaus. The investigation revealed the existence and recurrence of obstetric violence as an unethical conduct and without scientific bases, by some health professionals. It is clear, finally, that obstetric violence has strong roots in unequal gender relations, religious and patriarchal morality, institutional and cultural violence that legitimize the symbolic and moral violence perpetrated against women at the time of childbirth.
