Resumo
Topical use of copaiba oil is part of the popular medicine of Amazonian peoples. Its resin is considered anti-inflammatory among other functions. However, additional studies are needed to prove its herbal role. More precisely, an approach on the profile of immune cells and cytokines involved in acute inflammation directly in the joints. Thus, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of topical application of copaiba oil on the tibiotarsal joints of Balb/c mice. For this, the animals were divided into four groups (n=6): Saline, Carrag 1%, Diclo and Cop and induced inflammation by Carrageenan (except Saline) for 5 hours, with copaiba being topically applied to the left paw of the animals (Cop) 3 hours before the end of the experiment. Paw thickness measurements and blood collections (leukogram and cytokine levels) were the parameters used to evaluate this study. In conclusion, topical application of copaiba had an anti-edematogenic effect, inhibited leukocytosis and lymphocytosis, reduced the levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokines IFN-γ, TNF and IL-17A, and increased the level of the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL- 10. The main features of carrageenan inflammation were edematous paws/leukocytosis/lymphocytosis and elevated levels of TNF/IFN-γ. The promising results obtained in this study reinforce the anti-inflammatory role of topical copaiba use in the treatment of inflammatory diseases.
