Prevalência da doença renal em adultos no Brasil e na região metropolitana de Manaus

Abstract

Introduction: Kidney disease is a common condition that can affect children, adults, and the elderly. Studies show that its prevalence in the world is around 10%. Estimating the Brazilian and Manauara prevalence is important in order to provide data for improvements in the quality of care for the patients and the provision of health services. Objective: To estimate the prevalence of kidney disease in adults in Brazil and in the Metropolitan Region of Manaus. Methods: Two studies were carried out. One study systematically reviewed studies published in Brazil that estimated the prevalence of kidney disease. Another study estimated the prevalence of kidney disease by means of a cross-sectional population-based study in the Metropolitan Region of Manaus. Results: In the systematic review it was observed that the prevalence of renal disease in Brazil varied according to the method used in the definition of the disease. According to population criteria, 1.5-3 out of 100 Brazilians would have the disease and 0.05% would undergo dialysis in Brazil. The cross-sectional study in the Metropolitan Region of Manaus suggests prevalence where two out of 100 Manaus may have kidney disease. Conclusion: The two studies allow estimating that kidney disease occurs throughout Brazil, including in the Metropolitan Region of Manaus. Further studies supported in clinical-laboratory diagnosis, thus standardizing the diagnostic method, may improve this estimate.
