Resumo
This study assumed the purpose of identifying the meaning and types of violence
against women in the indigenous context, locating the trajectory of women sateré-mawé
who live or have experienced domestic violence. Violence against indigenous women
are characterized as an expression of social issue is extremely serious enough to
engender the women strategies for coping. The killings and assaults against women
drove the articulation of the indigenous movement around the theme of gender,
presenting himself now as one of the main agendas and concerns of indigenous women's
movement. The lack of studies, mainly at the local, that address systematically the
actions taken by Indigenous women in breaking the silence in the face of relationships
considered as domestic violence was one of the reasons that led us to investigate the
issue. The research took the perspective of qualitative approaches without excluding the
quantitative aspects, using the technique of semi-structured interview aimed at focus
groups, in addition to the narratives of life histories. Research shows that domestic
violence has brought suffering and restrictions for women sateré-mawé, detecting what
violence is in designing them and what are the interference of this phenomenon in the
lives of these women and their communities. It was noted, too, the distance between the
current institutional and legal changes that indigenous women sateré-mawé. The
answers found by Indigenous women to deal with and/or disrupt with violence has been
based on local strategies and tools, such as the creation of the indian police saterémawé. This strategy has been the main way legitimized by ethnic group for the
resolution of cases of violence against women in the villages.
