“Hereges” x “Idólatras”: embates entre Batistas e Católicos em Manaus (1900-1920)

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the arrival of the Baptists in Manaus, and the power disputes between them and the Local Church. To think of today’s Manaus is realizing the undeniable importance of religion, since it is notable a powerful religious speech presence in the daily life of social relations. There have always been a large number of Catholic Christians. However, nowadays the growth and proliferation of churches of various denominations throughout the city are perceived. This dissertation seeks to understand the dawn of the power disputes between two Christian groups: The Baptists and the Catholics, in the early twentieth century in Manaus. As a matter of substance, the research seeks to analyze the insertion of modern thinking, through the clash between the Reformed Christianism and the Catholic Church of that period, yet influenced by the conservative thinking of nineteenth-century newspapers.
