Resumo
The search for substitutes of synthetic insecticides has motivated many researches considering
the use of oils, extracts or active derivatives from plants. This search can be justified because
of the potential insecticide these derivatives have, associated to the easy degradation of their
constituents, less toxicity and also because they represent a safer alternative to the
environment. Eugenol has aroused the interest of researchers who seek for ways of controlling
the larvae of Aedes aegypti as it has a proven larvicidal action. However, the direct use of
eugenol has limitations related to its solubility in aqueous places. Therefore, obtaining a
system that favors its release in aqueous places is necessary. Thus, this study aimed to get a
formulation containing eugenol epoxide, and to test its effectiveness in controlling A. aegypti
larvae, in laboratory conditions. The derivative was obtained by the methylation and
epoxidation reactions through 1H NMR analysis. The polymer formulations were obtained by
the block polymerization method. The larvicidal activity was evaluated from the
determination of the median lethal concentration (LC50). The result of 1H NMR analysis
identified the derivative as eugenol epoxide, being incorporated 3%, 5% and 10% in the
polymeric formulation. The polymer formulation with 10% eugenol epoxide showed
larvicidal activity (LC50 0, 827 mg / mL), causing mortality of 100% of the larvae within 24
hours after application. The results of this study evidenced the potential of formulated for
controlling the A. aegypti larvae. So, this study emerges as an effective and promising
alternative to be used as a new agent to control A. aegypti mosquito larvae.
