Tooth whitening, although it has become very popular among patients, still has as common reaction to its practice tooth sensitivity (DS). The use of low concentration whitening gel has been proposed to decrease this sensitivity associated with light sources, but there is still no consensus as to its effectiveness. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of 6% hydrogen peroxide (PH) with violet LED photoclarger by the office whitening technique. Thirty-one patients were selected for a randomized, double-blind clinical trial (evaluator and statistic) that followed a split-mouth design creating (2 groups): PH6LED subjected to 6% PH office bleaching technique associated with the use of LED photobleacher Violet; PH6 submitted to the technique with 6% PH, without photoactivation. Two 33-minute bleaching sessions were performed in both groups, with objective (spectrophotometer) and subjective (visual color guide) color evaluation; performed at the beginning, before the second session, 7 days and 30 days after the end of the bleaching treatment. Sensitivity was measured using the 5-point Numerical Scale (NRS) and the Visual Analog Scale (VAS). The results showed greater whitening effectiveness for the PH6LED group in the subjective evaluation with the Vita Bleachedguide scale (PH6LED ∆SGU = 2.8 ± 1.2 and PH6 ∆SGU = 2.6 ± 1.2; p = 0.014) and statistical similarity in the objective (PH6LED ∆E = 10.3 ± 12.2 and PH6 ∆E = 9.9 ± 8.6) and tooth sensitivity intensity (PH6LED 0.23 ± 0.39 and PH6 0.32 ± 0.59). The absolute risk of DS (recorded at least once by patients) was equal for both groups. The adopted significance level was 5%. The use of LED photoclarger did not result in greater effectiveness or enhanced the sensitivity after bleaching.
