Resumo
Manaus, in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century, it became a major
exporter and importer retail center, where groups who profited from rubber trade were
closely linked with international capital. So transform “backward” city in a “modern”
city was mandatory for local administrators condition, since the city had to adpt to this
conception of “Modern” becoming a “civilized” urban center. In this perspective, we
sougth to examine how the Jornal do Commercio, the first decade of existence, played
the role of architect in the construction of these social and urban transformation, before
the new paradigm of modernity to issues such as education, safety, hygiene, health,
culture, entertainment, fashion and consumption. Yet, we sougth to analyze the
trajectory of the first owners of the newspaper, their social relationships built in
Amazonian society and strategies employed to increase the number of readers.
