Resumo
This study analyzed the stability and antibacterial activity of an emulsion in based of copaiba oil(Copaifera multijuga Hayne) in 10% for cavity cleaning, according to the physicochemical properties of quality control and antibacterial activity, following the standardization of guidelines and standards good manufacturing practices of the Brazilian Pharmacopoeia and the National Health
Surveillance Agency. For quality control, the emulsion test was stored in different environments
(greenhouse, room temperature, room temperature protected from light, a place with air conditioning,
fridge and freezer) and evaluated in different periods (from 0.3 to 6 months ). There were, with this
emulsion, centrifuge tests, determination of pH, density, microbiological evaluation and organoleptic.
The antibacterial activity of the formulations on the microorganisms Streptococcus mutans
(ATCC25175), Streptococcus oralis (ATCC10557), Streptococcus salivarius (ATCC7073) and
Lactobacillus paracasei (ATCC335) was analyzed by using the minimum inhibitory concentration
tests and minimum bactericidal. The results of the pH test and density determination were analyzed by
ANOVA and Bonferroni's test (p <0.05). The other tests were given descriptive analysis In the
centrifugation test, there was no phase separation at time 0 in the time of three months, stored in
freezer, fridge and air conditioning and time of six months, stored in freezer, fridge, while in other
environments in different times there was phase separation; in the pH test, the greenhouse storage
environment, room temperature protected from light, room temperature and air conditioning had
statistically significant difference from the control group (time 0), fridge and freezer in experimental
periods; in the density test, the greenhouse had the lowest density values and showed a statistically
significant difference in relation to: control group (zero time), time 3 months (fridge, freezer and air
conditioning) and time 6 months (fridge and freezer); in microbiological evaluation there was no
bacterial growth; in organoleptic evaluation at time 0 no had change, in time of 3 months, there was
only change in color of the emulsion stored in glass and in time of 6 months, a change in color of the
emulsion stored in room temperature and in room temperature protected of light. The emulsion test
showed bacteriostatic and bactericidal activity, respectively, in concentrations of 13,33μL/ml and 15
μL/ml for S. mutans; 20 μL/ml and 23,33 μL/mL for S. salivarius and 13,33 μL/ml and 15 μL/ml for
L. paracasei. The lowest concentration of the test emulsion (8,33μL/ml) demonstrated bactericidal
activity against S. oralis. In conclusion, the emulsion showed antibacterial activity against all tested
microorganisms; presented conditions of stability and quality without contaminants in freezer and in
fridge. Considering, for the daily clinic, the best environment is the refrigerator.
