Background: Technology-assisted learning for health professionals has been extremely explored in Western countries as an effective and useful tool. In the training of medical students, teaching basic surgical techniques has been requiring adjustments over time that meet the requirements of effective, ethical and legal learning established by normative rules. To give support to the qualification of health professionals, the use of mobile computing stands as a technological revolution of great impact and can be employed in the discipline of Operative Technique and Experimental Surgery (TOCE) in the teaching of basic procedures such as tracheostomy, chest tube insertion and phlebotomy, important for medical training. The employment of educational software as a teaching supportive tool may help to optimize learning in a flipped classroom scenario. Objective: To create a complementary learning method based on software (application - app). Methods: A search for a platform accessible through the web was undertaken so that it allowed to create an application for educational purposes that included the use of texts, images, and sound. The (app) should enable the assembly of a virtual environment to demonstrate the fundamentals and execution of basic procedures of operative technique and experimental surgery. The platform should have the following features: allow the application to be easily built graphically, no need for computer programming skills required, it should be inexpensive, it should allow easy publishing in application stores, it should be easily accessed by students and be free of charges for them. Results: The Appmkr® platform for application construction was chosen and a virtual learning environment in the form of an electronic guide was created, including TOCE’s instructional texts and videos of surgical procedures such as tracheostomy, venous cutdown and chest tube insertion produced exclusively for the tool. The application was published in the GooglePlay store in android and html5 formats. Conclusion: This educational tool developed in the form of an electronic guide for mobile computers has the potential to complement traditional classes of the discipline and can be used in learning activities of the flipped classroom format applied to medical students using distance education resources with access to networks and the internet.
