A dinâmica das paisagens: nas comunidades São José e São Francisco em Careiro da Várzea – AM

Abstract

Careiro da Várzea is a municipality in the State of Amazonas, which developed predominantly in a floodplain environment. Naturally, this environment goes through constant landscape dynamics due to periods of floods and low tides. Living in an environment of continuous landscape transformations, residents have adapted to the region's seasonal dynamics. Therefore, the objective of this study was to understand the dynamics of landscapes in the communities of São José and São Francisco in the municipality of Careiro da Várzea - AM. This research was described as a qualitative and descriptive case study. The methodological scheme of the research involves bibliographical review, methods such as snowballing, guided tours, unstructured interviews, photographic records and unsystematic observations. The results obtained in the study indicated that the relationships and interactions in the landscapes of the communities of São José and São Francisco were considered sound processes, resulting from the influence of seasonal climate variations, the seasonality of the river and extreme hydrological events. The mosaic of productive activities in the communities was composed of fishing, agricultural and livestock activities, governed by the seasonal calendar. It was found that the landscape influenced life in communities on multiple scales, be they economic, social and cultural. Finally, conventions state that the influence of El Niño on communities is not limited only to the visually transparent landscape, but also extends to productive and economic systems. However, farmers in these communities found different ways of adapting, modifying not only the time they produce their produce, but also the way they carry out their work. However, depending on the intensity and duration of extreme weather events, riverside communities will likely experience vulnerability in the face of these extreme events.
