Objective: The objective of this study was to analyze the influence of three mouthwashes (Colgate Plax Ice Infinity, Listerine Total Care Alcohol-Free, and Periogard Daily Use 0.06%) and a control solution (mineral water) on the color stability of two resin composites (Filtek Z350 – 3M Oral Care in the WB shade; Palfique LXS - Tokuyama in the BW shade).Materials and Methods: Resin composite specimens were fabricated in a disc format (6.0mm x 2.0mm), inserted into palatal devices, and worn by 07 volunteers. During each cycle, the volunteers were instructed to wear the palatal device continuously, removing it only during meals, beverage consumption, tooth brushing, and overnight. Outside the oral cavity, volunteers were instructed to clean the inner surface of the device through brushing and the outer surface (where the resin specimens were located) using only running water and gauze. The cycles spanned 30 days in situ, where in each volunteer received a device with 8 resin specimens (4 of each commercial brand) and performed a 20ml mouthwash twice a day for 30 seconds with the solution under study. Color analysis of the resin specimens was conducted at three time points: T0 before initiating the study, T1 after 15 days of contact with the solution, and T2 after 30 days. There were intervals of 7 days (wash-out) during color analysis and during the replacement of mouthwash solution. Color analysis was measured using digital photographs, which were analyzed by the mColorMeter version 2.5.3 program, providing CIE-Lab color scale values (color analysis). It is considered ΔE < 3.3 to indicate clinically acceptable variations. Results: The use of the mouthwashes tested in the in situ study induced color change of the evaluated resin composites, resulting in color variation in the samples (p < 0.05), thus rejecting the null hypothesis. Two-way ANOVA showed a statistically significant interaction only after 30 days of use. The Colgate Plax Ice Infinity mouthwash induced the worst color variations (Z350 ΔE: 9.11±12.38; Palfique ΔE: 10.96±7.54). Conclusion: The unique chemical formulation of each mouthwash has a significant impact on its propensity to cause color alteration.
