Resumo

Traditional populations of the Amazon, in a new global context, play a role of great importance to the preservation of the environment and the practice of sustainable development. These traditional populations make use of several agricultural and fishing practices handed down from generation to generation. This research consists in a descriptive exploratory study, whose general objective is to characterize the Novo Horizonte community on Lake Janauacá, located in the state of Amazonas, in a socioeconomic, environmental and cultural perspective. To achieve the proposed objective, the research, primarily, consisted of a literature review on the subject and, subsequently, a field research, using quantitative procedures and qualitative content approach, with the following methodological procedures: survey visits, photographic record and the application of semi-structured questionnaires to residents of the aforementioned community, covering issues that made possible the collection of socioeconomic, environmental and cultural information. It is possible to consider it through an environmental and cultural ideology, in which people unite to defend common interests and to develop action projects that aim, in this case, the struggle for a sustainable environment, based, mainly, on environmentally friendly, socially just and economically viable principles. The New Horizon community carries different cultural traits, which are the result of a territory that suffered contemporary influences, concerning to cultural mobility. The economy is based on cultivation of seasonal crops of cassava and production of flour, in other words, manual and familiar activities.
