Resumo

The emulsion based on copaiba oil (Copaifera multijuga Hayne) has demonstrated biological activities as a dentin biomodifier in several studies. The research aimed to analyze the efficacy, stability and safety of the copaiba oil-based emulsion in the dentin matrix. This research was divided into four studies: (STUDY I) In vitro quality control of the emulsion through physical-chemical tests, antibacterial evaluation and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) test; (STUDY II) In vitro evaluation of the stability of collagen present in the dentin of human permanent teeth against copaiba emulsion; (STUDY III) Randomized clinical trial (RCT) consisting of a case group with copaiba emulsion (GEC), a positive control group with 2% chlorhexidine digluconate (GCLX) and a negative control group with distilled water (GC1) in 27 deciduous teeth with clinical and radiographic analysis and (STUDY IV) an ex vivo evaluation of the dentin surface of exfoliated deciduous teeth through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), histological analysis and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). STUDY I demonstrated that the emulsion has stability against physical-chemical, organoleptic and microbial contamination parameters, in addition to presenting antibacterial activity. In STUDY II, it was verified that the copaiba emulsion improved the stability of the dentin matrix through the measurement of the collagen modulus of elasticity. In STUDY III and IV, the efficacy and safety of the emulsion in RCT was attested. The copaiba emulsion, before just a smear layer remover agent, can be a dentin biomodifier, with proven biological activity, acting on the collagen resistance and integrity of the hybrid layer, being safe for clinical use. Thus, the tested copaiba emulsion is suitable for use in phase II of the RCT.
