Resumo

The Prelature of Itacoatiara in the mid of 1970s, it directs the pastoral work interested in the discussion of indigenous issues. This concern arises when the constant harassment of the brazilian government, through the National Integration Policies, who throw themselves on the lands populated by Waimiri-Atroari, which threatened, in the view of the Prelature, remove the key to their survival rights. To combat this plan of state, these missionaries have developed, from the second half of 1975, a series of projects aimed at investigating and denouncing the worst forms of approximation of national company with those people. Born the indigenous pastoral that prelature, which will, through an awareness, promote a series of debates in a lot of forums to expose the abuses of the Waimiri-Atroari. With the intensification of these actions and the impending implementation of Integration Policies, missionaries create in 1983 the Movimento de Apoio Á Resistência Waimiri-Atroari (Support Resistance Waimiri-Atroari Movement – MAREWA), with the aim of promoting a popular motion that was able to halt the progression of these projects and this order to ensure the conservation of the way of life of those Indians. Therefore, this work presents the trajectory of the struggle of men and women of the Prelature of Itacoatiara engaged in MAREWA around Waimiri-Atroari indigenous population and in defense of what they believed to be the ideal of Indian policy. Presents the consequences of this action are not only in his attacks against the state, but also in a dimension that not detached from the popular, as intimately attached to it and that in turn guarantee your approval and / or rejection within the social. Then, this text offers a backdrop of social relations, where individuals emerge that make the history of this rich, multifaceted and able to provide an overview of that society around issues of indigenous and popular movement demands put on yours program.
