Resumo

The school context leads teachers every day to look for innovations to the pedagogical doing. The transversal themes arise with the purpose of bringing schools to the discussion of building citizenship with their students, so that they can be able to live in society. Therefore, this work had aims at investigating if the transversal themes have been worked in the English teachers’ classes of the Elementary School at Manaus Municipal Department of Education and how such themes have been taught. As specific objectives, to verify how the transversal theme are inserted in the teaching practice of these English teachers, and also to discuss the possible obstacles and benefits of working on these subjects in the classroom. The theoretical basis is anchored in the National Curricular Parameters: third and fourth cycles: foreign language (BRAZIL, 1998b) and also in the National Curricular Parameters of the Transversal Themes (BRAZIL, 1998a), Transversality and Transversal Themes (ARAÚJO, 2003; YUS, 1998), as well as in the work of other researchers who, like me, have tried to contribute in some way about the subject. This research takes the qualitative paradigm (OLIVEIRA, 2012), using the case study (BOGDAN and BIKLEN, 1994; GIL, 2008; YIN, 2001) as methodology. The research was fulfilled with six English teachers of Manaus Municipal Department of Education. The data were generated through questionnaires (investigative and profile) and class observation of the research participants. At the end of the work, suggestions are presented for studies and works, aiming to continue future research on the subject. Key Words: Transversality. Transversal Themes.
