Objective: This study aims to establish the pharmacotherapeutic profile of hospitalized
patients using antimicrobials in a high complexity cardiology hospital located in the state of
Amazonas. Methods: This was a primary, observational, descriptive, retrospective, crosssectional study, carried out by analyzing the prescriptions of antimicrobials dispensed from
March to May 2019 to patients hospitalized in a hospital, whose collected data were analyzed
and interpreted through descriptive statistics, after approval by the Ethics Committee of the
Federal University of Amazonas (CAAE 9010919.6.0000.5020). Results: The variables
demonstrated a pharmacotherapeutic profile with a prevalence of male patients; age between
25-89 years; admissions to the Intensive Care Units; infections originating in the hospital
environment and identification of the etiological agent. It was also identified the practice of
polypharmacy and the high prevalence of drug interactions associated with the combined
prescription of vancomycin + gentamicin, with greater severity and potential risk of
nephrotoxicity. Conclusion: Therefore, it is necessary to consolidate the actions of the
Hospital Infection Control Commission (CCIH) and in particular of the clinical pharmacist,
seeking to expand the knowledge of the multidisciplinary health team in the identification of
potential Drug Interactions (DIs), reduce the irrational use of antimicrobials, and
consequently, increasing safety standards for patients.
