Identidade e representação na fronteira pan-amazônica: árabes-muçulmanos em contexto transfronteiriço (Brasil – Venezuela)

Abstract

This thesis intends to understand the significance and re-signification of Arab-Muslim identity in a context of intense migratory flows on the pan-Amazonian border, between Brazil and Venezuela, more precisely, the city of Santa Elena de Uaíren in the municipality of Gran Sabana , Venezuela. The objectives of the study are to interpret the representations elaborated by this diasporic ethnic-religious group in the context of a city located in an area of intense migratory flow, as well as to investigate from a mythical anthropological belonging, the historical narratives in the time, that contribute to diacritical identity formation. Methodologically, it relies on the approach of ethnographic research because it considers that the work proposes to understand the universe of meanings produced by the Arab-Muslims of Santa Elena de Uairén and how this universe produces belongings and positions for this group in contrast to the other groups of the city. The hypothesis of this work is that such identity focuses on an ethno-religious belonging, which functions as an ethos for this group, elaborating, meaning and re-signifying such belonging invariably in a condition of contact with other identities that are also elaborated in contextual relation in constant movement where transnational cultural flows and dynamics are inserted.
