Elites políticas em confronto: as disputas pelo poder político durante a belle époque no Amazonas (1889-1912)

Abstract

This master's dissertation investigates the conflicts and disputes among political elites for power in the State of Amazonas during the First Republic, covering the period from 1889 to 1912. The study provides a detailed analysis of the complex power dynamics, political strategies, and social transformations that shaped the regional political landscape in this context. Chapter I of the research addresses the political disputes that marked the period, revealing moments of instability, coups, and the influence of newspapers in disseminating the views of the conflicting oligarchies. Chapter II analyzes the government of the Nery oligarchy, highlighting its power-seeking strategies and its influence on local politics. It also explores the rise of Antônio Clemente Ribeiro Bittencourt as a turning point in Amazonas' political history. In Chapter III, the dissertation focuses on political crises and armed conflicts, including the bombing of Manaus in 1910 and the deposition of Bittencourt in 1912. It examines the causes behind these events and how party rivalries contributed to political instability in the region. Overall, this dissertation sheds light on the intense and intricate power struggles in the State of Amazonas during the First Republic, offering an in-depth analysis of the strategies, conflicts, and impacts of these confrontations on the political trajectories of the region.
