Zoonotic helminths of dogs are neglected diseases common in Brazil and worldwide.
These zoonotics diseases range from dermatological and gastrointestinal symptoms even more
serious impairment involving the central nervous system. However the parasitics biology and
their involvement as a health problem for low-income people is still a subject of discussion
among researchers and healthcare professionals. It s become serious when involves other
zoonotic disease, caused by flagellate protozoan, also neglected disease, endemic in Brazil:
the American visceral leishmaniasis. Aiming to draw a profile of these zoonotic helminthiasis
in the city of Salvaterra, state of Pará, in northern Brazil, is that biological samples had been
collected from animals euthanized by Leishmaniasis Control Programme of Ministry of
Health. Blood, feces and collected helminths besides digestive tube, including heart and
lungs, were analyzed. Twenty-five animals samples presented eggs, larvae and adults of
zoonotic helminths, there had been predominance of the parasitic genus Dirofilaria (44%)
following in order of frequency, hookworm (36%), Dipylidium (12%) and Trichuris(4%). We
also observed the occurrence of multiple parasitism (rate of 12%) between Dirofilariaand
Ancylostoma genus and the same rate between Dirofilaria and Dipylidium genus. The
occurrence of parasitic helminths of dogs in rural Salvaterra with zoonotic potencial,
highlights the role of animals in the transmission and maintenance of zoonoses. The data
above reveal the vulnerability of the local population within these settings, where the human
being remains hostage to emerging and reemerging diseases with few possibilities of changes
in regard to prevention and control by public health agency.
