Sarcopenia em pessoas idosas com diabetes mellitus tipo 2 residentes da Amazônia Brasileira: dados do estudo SAPPA

Resumo

INTRODUCTION: Sarcopenia is a generalized and progressive muscle disease that when associated with systemic diseases such as type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2), accentuates the loss of muscle performance and strength and increases the risk of functional disability in the elderly. The prevalence of sarcopenia is associated with sociodemographic, clinical and intrinsic variables of elderly people. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the prevalence of sarcopenia and its associated factors in elderly individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus living in the interior of Amazonas. METHODOLOGY: Data from the Study of Health in Primary Care of the Amazon Population (SAPPA) were used, comprising 544 diabetic participants aged 60 years and over. Pearson's Chi Square Test was applied with a significance level of p<0.05, and the data were analyzed in SPSS.24. RESULTS: Sarcopenia was present in 10.29% (n=56) of the people evaluated. Older age (>80 years), lower education level (0 to 5 years), higher level of difficulty in daily activities, use of up to 2 medications per day and presenting incapacity or low functional capacity showed a significant relationship with the diagnosis of sarcopenia. CONCLUSION: Difficulty in activities of daily living, low functional capacity and socioeconomic variables are significantly related to sarcopenia in the elderly population of this study.
