The cognitive characteristics present in the elderly with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) treated at Primary Health Care (PHC) in the city of Coari, in the interior of Amazonas, were identified. This is a cross-sectional study carried out with 58 elderly people. The female sex was predominant in the sample, 69,0%; the most prevalent age group was 60 to 69 years old 46,6%; as for education, 63,8% of the participants are literate. The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and the Verbal Fluency Test (VPT) were used to assess the variables of interest. MMSE data show that 42,1% of participants had cognitive impairment. The evaluation carried out through the VPT shows that 22% of the sample has a high cognitive decline. When performing the analysis taking into account the adjustment for sex, age, education, color/race, and income, no association was observed between MMSE and PVT.
